Modular Narratives in Contemporary Cinema by Allan Cameron

Cameron's theory is based on four models of narrative:

  • Anachronic - this modular narrative involves the use of flashbacks and/or flashforwards, with no clear dominance between any of the narrative threads. The scenes can also be portrayed again from a different perspective (i.e. Pulp Fiction)

  • Episodic - organised as an abstract series or narrative anthology. May appear disconnected but actually is.

  • Forking paths - an alternative story;  juxtaposition of alternative versions a story, showing the possible outcomes that might result from small changes in a single event or group of events. The forking-path narrative introduces a number of plotlines that usually contradict one another.

  • Split screen - films that adapt this approach divide the screen into two or more frames, juxtaposing events within the same visual field, in a sustained fashion.
