Dancing In The Distraction Factory: Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin's theory suggests that the ordinary music videos often include genre-specific conventions (i.e. hip hop videos have a lot of attractive women, pop videos feature shots in a studio etc). According to his music video theory, vidoes may also feature intertextuality (read more here).

There are also frequent references to the voyeristic treatment of a female body; that is, when a woman makes eye contact with the camera seductively or the notion of looking can be referenced by the use of props (mirros, cameras etc).

Goodwing proposes there's a relationship between the music and the visuals. Those could be:

  • amplifying

  • illustrative

  • contradictory

Andrew recognises that the record label which an artist is signed to often has particular demands such as close up shots or conventional performances.
