The research into my project's target audience (teenagers/young adults/students) revealed a lot of information about what kind of media texts they prefer and how they view our ideas. In terms of genre, Indie was the preferred genre which is a good thing for us because it's the genre we're working with. In the questionnaire, I asked which of the stated videos people liked the most and Gotye's Somebody I Used To Know received the most responses while Nicki Minaj's Anaconda came second. It really shows that new and creative ideas are appreciated and noticed as opposed to the popular idea of how conventional narrative-performance-based videos are most likely to be audience's favourites.
In consideration to this, naturalistic location was believed to be the best setting for an indie music video according to the results of the questionnaire. Currently, our main idea revolves around an urban area (which was the second favourite choice for an indie music video location) because we think it's a good place to signify loneliness and nostalgia which can be nicely represented with the artist being around people but not being a part of them.
I thought including audience's ideas of how an indie artist should look like was an interesting idea because that's the paqrt that people often overlook when watching music videos only because it's not usually stressed too much unless it's a pop or oher gene music video. Answers mostly included statements such as 'casual wear' and 'vintage' wich I personally completely agree.
When I was analysing the results, I found people had responded to the idea of where we're planning on filming our video (urban area) the best. They had criticism such as 'If it's a nostalgic song, I think you could film it in nature spaces, like parks and open spaces around town' as well as ideas of their own 'A car is a pretty good location for some shots too, y'know, the whole gazing-through-the-window-look-at-the-rain-my-life-is-so-angsty look.'
In conclusion, I think my research has shown that people to respond to media texts more actively than it is believed nowadays. I think as long as we keep the attention attracted, whether it's the cinematography or the setting or the way the artist is dressed, we can achieve good feedback from the target audience.
