Music video conventions: Indie

Indie genre evokes from its audience a certain emotion and feeling which is acomplished by applying specific codes and conventions of the genre in indie music videos. Some of these generic elements include:

  • use of instruments such as guitar, piano, drums etc

  • distinctive aesthetics in comparison to mainstream culture

  • strong association between the lyrics and visual representation of the theme/context of the band/artist/song

  • appropriate appearance of the band/artist in the music video

  • brand identity/performance style is appropriate to the genre in its focus on the meaning of the music/message within the songs

Indie music video narrative:

  • artist/band is shown performing

  • the video follows a narrative which links to the lyrics/theme of the song (see: All I Want by Kodaline)

  • mise en scene is used in a relevant way, props such as instruments and settings such as woods are used often

  • editing of the video is in line with the song (i.e. if the song is slow, the editing will be similar; see: Skinny Love by Birdy)
