Costume Analysis: Lana Del Rey

Femininity

The costume over all looks very natural and feminine. There's a lot of flower-themed aspects, such as the flower crown and flower imitations on her playsuit. Such feminine appeal is relevant when representing Lana as an artist because it connotes her perpective as free-spirited as opposed to a strict minimalistic cuts and textures wich usually signify a more conservative perspective. This idea of a free-spirit immediately suggests that her music must also have this concept. Femininity in the appearance is also strongly represented through the use of colour. The red suggets passion, love and other strong feelings which are always closely linked to the idea of femininity as opposed to dark colours which are often found to be associated more with the idea of masculinity. When analysing Lana's genre (indie pop/dream pop/chamber pop) as well as her visual representation, I found artists who also express themselves as well as their creative work in similar ways. Some of these artists include Lykke Li, Lorde, Ellie Goulding, Lights etc.

The theory of the male gaze (Laura Mulvey, 1975) can be applied here as her bare skin gives off strong sexual connotations which, according to the theory, appeal to men since they often undertake a voyeristic approach and see a woman 'as an image'. The male gaze is instantly directed at according areas such as the showing of bare skin etc. Meanwhile, the woman's gaze is also closely linked to the male gaze as it suggests women instantly gaze at areas which provide aesthethic pleasure (such as her face, jewellery etc).

Hair, make up

In terms of Lana's (or rather her stylists') make up and hair choices, it seems to be kept at a minimal level, even though it's still quite ellegant. Curly hair is always seen as a romantic aspect of a girl's appearance as opposed to straight hair option which is more often associated with assertivenes/strickness and such. Her make up is also done in a 60s manner (black eye liner, defined eyebrows, 'nude' lipstick). Lana is famous for embracing the 60s era to everything she does, including singing about Woodstock and living in a caravan, and her appearance seems not be an exeption. It's definitely the artist's signature which marks her brand identity as well as the artist's representation. Lana is a good example how every little aspect is important in a modern artist/entertainer: from one's make up to body language to costume choice.

In my opinion, this costume choice for a photoshoot for Vogue which is a very popular fashion magazine, is quite well put together because it represents the artist in an accurate way while also appealing to the magazine's audience which is obviously interested in fashion.
