Iconography in Media

The term relates to the images used in movies, especially ones concerning a particular genre; for instance, in an action movie we expect fast cars, guns, explosions, 'bad guys', police etc. All of these things are often also referred to as 'gere indicators'; that is they suggest the audience immediately what genre the movie is. Some iconography examples:

Music Videos and Iconography: in music videos, a genre is also always aplicable which immediately suggests that iconography is also going to play part. For example, pop vidoes will conventionally feature choreography while rock videos usually use a darker colour scheme. In terms of indie music videos, which is what I focus on in my project, the genre indicators usually lay in the acustic instruments that are used within the video as well as the costume and other important elements of mise en scene. In terms of costume, indie music videos feature semi-casual clothing because the artists usually do not strive to appear ethereal but rather in touch with their target audience. This genre out of all is especially concerned with the narrative but is also the most relaxed and low key in terms of the visuals.
