Magazine Advert: Florence & The Machine
Simplification of the photograph and how it affects our perception of the artist: The lighting hits Florence as she's the most important subject within the picture. This perhaps is a hint for the sounds and meanings one should expect when listening to the album: inner exposure of the mind, personal issues discussed using lyrics, expression of feelings. Secondary to her, are the lungs on her chest which attract the attention after her face. Since 'Lungs' is the name of her album, the idea of 'hanging' the lungs from her neck seems interesting: this could be seen as another expression of 'wearing my heart on my sleeve'.
In terms of tone and colour of the advert, everything seems to be toned down, mostly dark colours are used in the background which are then contrasted with the typography and Florence herself. It creates a balance within the picture which makes it pleasing to the eye and easy to decode vital information which is presented in it. However, when looked more closely we can see how the black background is not black in its entirety - clues of damage and perhaps layering of different shades of black can be identified which creates a sort of texture resulting in suggesting authenticity and imperfection within it.
Expanding on the idea of the text in the advert, the conventional band font is used while the other words vary in their size/boldness etc. For instance, LUNGS being the title, it's meant to attract audiences while the other text is merely for informational purposes. So if the title, written in a big font with italics does end up attracting a consumer of media, the text below is more formal to make it easy for them to compehend what the advert is trying to tell them (which is to buy the album!).
Considering all of this, I think our magazine advert will have a similar approach of representation of the artist. Since Meg is the only artist, having her alone in the lime light would be efficient, giving perhaps more freedom to post-production. I particulary enjoyed Florence's idea of lungs being hunged from her neck so perhaps this will lead me and the other project members to forming interesting ideas of Meg's music representation.
