Music Videos: Mise En Scene
Setting: Indie music videos' most popular location is natural as the sound of music usually tries to compliment that and vice versa. In Ellie Goulding's Your Song music video the use of setting reflects on the concept of the song as well as its composition: simple melody complimented by Ellie's voice. Kodaline's High Hopes also use a similar approach; however, the visuals portray a story rather than a concept.

The mise en scene in this screen shot of Kodaline's High Hopes video says a lot about the narrative. In terms of setting and props, they create a vey home-like environment. One can notice how the man has poured wine into a nicer glass for his guest which signifies her importance to him. There's also empty beer bottles and cups on the table as well as flowers which look almost dead; these props suggest that not only a man is living there on hus own but also that he doesn't often receive guests at his home. This is also revealed by the characters' boldy laguage in the picture; the woman is sitting quite upright while the man looks more at ease, except maybe baffled by the woman's presence. His crossed arms also suggest he's not yet ready to open up and engage while the woman doesn't push him and instead gives him space.
In Ellie Goulding's Your Song music video, the framing of the shot is usually so Ellie is the main point of it. Althougj the song is dedicated to someone, the video features a lot of personal Ellie's moments, where the audience of the video is treated like a spectator. The locations used in the video are very much natural, including a park, the woods and such. This connects with the indie genre as the conventional setting is often naturalistic. So the visuals compliment the lyrics; they let the audience hear what the song is about without distracting them with a lot of action within the shots as well as mise en scene. By keeping it simplistic in terms of costume, Ellie appears more sincere by use of casual clothing.
It's importany to remember that the music video compliments the song, that an appealing and relevant video brings success to the song and how well it does in the charts.
