Music Channels

A. Goodwin on postmodern music television:

  • the abandonment of grand narrative structures present in the postmodern culture is identified both in non-realist construction of music videos and in televisual test

  • Intertextuality blurres historical/chronological boundaries so it's made to look contemporary

  • 'Music television is considered to be a 'schizophrenic' abandonment of rational, liberal-humanist discourse that creates a nihilistic, amoral universe of representation on a par with other postmodern texts. It therefore abandons the realness of political and social engagement as they generally recognised, leading eiher to a pessimistic diagnosis or to suggestion that postmodern culture constitutes new forms of political resistance.'

Music channels in UK include VIVA, Magic, 4Music and muliple MTV subdivisions such as MTV Dance and MTV Classics. These channels also typically have 24-hour broadcasting programmes. The big outbreak of music videos in the UK appear to be 2008-onwards (VIVA was launched in 2009 while 4Music was launched in 2008).
