Tracking An Artist: Ellie Goulding
Elena Jane Goulding, 28, English. She began playing the clarinet at the age of nine, and at fourteen began learning guitar. She won a main part in a school production, the Wizard of Oz, as the scarecrow. She started songwriting at the age of 15 in college.
'After attending Kent for two years, she was spotted by Jamie Lillywhite of Turn First Artists at a university talent contest. After Goulding successfully showcased for Turn First Artists head Sarah Stennett, she was told to leave university and was set up in a house in West London. Lillywhite became her manager and A&R, and introduced her to the producer Starsmith who would become her chief collaborator and the primary producer of Lights.'
Elle's music genre is defined as indie pop, synthpop, folktronica. In her newest record, Goulding was described to have 'stepped away from the electronic sound of her previous album and moved to a more tribal and anthemic sound containing a bit more piano and vocal.' Elle is signed with Neon Gold, Interscope, Polydor and Cherrytree record labels.

Goulding, so far, has released four studio albums: Lights (2010), Bright Lights (2010), Halcyon (2012) and Halcyon Days (2013) (American Version). The album Lights debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and has sold over 850,000 copies in the UK. By the end of 2013, she has sold an estimated 4 million albums and 15 million singles worldwide.
So far the artist has organised two of her own tours - The Lights Tour (2010-11) and The Halcyon Days Tour (2012-14) as well as performed in multiple festivals and opened shows for artists like Katy Perry.
At the 2010 BRIT Awards she received the award for the Critic's Choice while in 2014 she was awarded with Best British Female award.

The artist has been successful in colaborating with other famous artists such as Calvin Harris, Skrillez and Lissie, who also happened to tour with Elle in the earlier stages of Goulding's career.
In terms of international success, her hit single Lights and Burn so far have been the highest achievements, especially in the States. By the time Halcyon, her second studio album was released, her first album became very successful overseas.
You can read more about her personal life in The Rolling Stone and New York Times in which she talks about inspiration behind Halcyon, her relationships and how they've influenced her as a song writer.
